20 years without a great Rock-idol (Prekladatel´ský Blog)
20 years without a great Rock-idol – 20 years without Freddie Mercury
On 23rd of November 1991 people could read a confession in the news papers made by a man who protected his privacy and was an extroverted entertainer on the stage. Yes, he was HIV positive and he had AIDS. Less than 24 hours later Freddie Mercury died in the age of 45.
His name still is well known and it’ll always be. He was the lead singer of the famous band Queen and wrote numerous songs for them. Amongst them a lot of Queen’s greatest hits like “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We will rock you” and “Another one bits the dust”. But he also performed several songs as solo artist. Together with the Catalan opera singer Montserrat Caballé he recorded the grandiose song “Barcelona”.
Mercury was born in 1946 in Zanzibar as Farrokh Bulsara. But during his school time he already started calling himself Freddie. There he also played in his first band. When he was 17 his family moved to England. In 1970 he eventually also changed his surname and in the same year the band Queen with which he should be so extremely successful was formed.
When performing he was an extroverted person. I couldn’t really believe it when reading that the music clip to “I want to brake free” (my favourite Queen song) had been banned by MTV cause the guys were dressed up as women! But in private Mercury was a quite introverted person. He always referred to Mary Austin as his only true friend. She had been his girlfriend for a long time and even though he had been in a relation with Jim Hutton until his death it’s been her who inherited most of his estates.
He’s referred to as being one of the greatest if not THE greatest singers of all times. And in my opinion he is, as he had a fascinating range over four octaves! Also in the West End Musical “We Will Rock You” his spirit is staying alive. It’s a breathtaking experience when audience and actors perform Mercury’s song “We are the champions” together in the end of the show.

One of the most iconic locations of the Switz city of Montreux is the Freddie Mercury Statue, right in front of Lake Geneva. The statue is also based on his Wembley look (a lot of fans call this Queen’s best show ever) and is one of the greatest tributes we’ve ever seen.

Thursday, November 24th marks twenty years since the death at the age of 45 of Freddie Mercury. The lead vocalist of Queen, one of the most successful bands in the history of rock and roll, would have turned 65 on September 5th this year had his life not been prematurely ended by AIDS.
Mercury formed Queen in 1970 with guitarist Bryan May and drummer Roger Taylor. During their 20 year career they released twelve albums, selling more than 170 million copies.
Songs like ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Somebody to Love’ and ‘We Are the Champions’ have already become anthems for a generation.
Alongside Montserrat Caballé, Mercury performed ‘Barcelona’, the official theme tune of the 1992 Olympics.
A 1980s icon of rock music and role model for the gay community, Mercury also had success as a solo artist with singles like ‘Living on my Own’.
A revolutionary artist, charismatic, provocative and theatrical in his stage performances, Freddie Mercury continues to be one of the most memorable musicians of the twentieth century.

Mini Bio: Queen Victoria (wikipedia)
Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she used the additional title of Empress of India.
Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, the fourth son of King George III. Both the Duke of Kent and the King died in 1820, and Victoria was raised under close supervision by her German-born mother Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She inherited the throne at the age of 18 after her father's three elder brothers died without surviving legitimate issue. The United Kingdom was already an established constitutional monarchy, in which the Sovereign held relatively few direct political powers. Privately, she attempted to influence government policy and ministerial appointments. Publicly, she became a national icon, and was identified with strict standards of personal morality.
She married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in 1840. Their nine children and 26 of their 34 grandchildren who survived childhood married into royal and noble families across the continent, tying them together and earning her the nickname "the grandmother of Europe". After Albert's death in 1861, Victoria plunged into deep mourning and avoided public appearances. As a result of her seclusion, republicanism temporarily gained strength, but in the latter half of her reign, her popularity recovered. Her Golden and Diamond Jubilees were times of public celebration.
Her reign of 63 years and 7 months, which is longer than that of any other British monarch and the longest of any female monarch in history, is known as the Victorian era. It was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire. She was the last British monarch of theHouse of Hanover; her son and successor Edward VII belonged to the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
