Thursday, November 24th marks twenty years since the death at the age of 45 of Freddie Mercury. The lead vocalist of Queen, one of the most successful bands in the history of rock and roll,would have turned 65 on September 5th this year had his life not been prematurely ended by AIDS.
Mercury formed Queen in 1970 with guitarist Bryan May and drummer Roger Taylor. During their 20 year career they released twelve albums, selling more than 170 million copies.
Songs like ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Somebody to Love’ and ‘We Are the Champions’ have already become anthems for a generation.
Alongside Montserrat Caballé, Mercury performed ‘Barcelona’, the official theme tune of the 1992 Olympics.
A 1980s icon of rock music and role model for the gay community, Mercury also had success as a solo artist with singles like ‘Living on my Own’.
A revolutionary artist, charismatic, provocative and theatrical in his stage performances, Freddie Mercury continues to be one of the most memorable musicians of the twentieth century.
